Monika Shepherd

Monika Ursula Shepherd (geb. von Manteuffel), beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on July 13, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 12, 1940, in Sechserben, East Prussia, amid the upheaval of World War II, Monika's earliest years were marked by extraordinary hardship. As a young child, she and her family were forced to flee their home, seeking refuge in western Germany. Those early experiences shaped the strength, resilience, and grace that became the hallmarks of her life, giving her a profound appreciation for family and the enduring power of hope. In 1963, after meeting her future husband, Monika made the courageous decision to leave Germany and begin a new chapter in the United States, where she married Larry Shepherd, built a home, and raised her two daughters. In 1977, she proudly became a citizen of the United States. For more than 55 years, Monika devoted her professional life to serving others as a Physical Therapist Assistant. She was passionate about helping people regain their strength, independence, and confidence. Through her compassionate care, she touched countless lives, building lasting friendships with patients, colleagues, and members of her community. Her kindness, encouragement, and unwavering dedication left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was always ready for her next adventure and embraced every opportunity to explore the world. Whether traveling to a new destination or appreciating the simple beauty of a quiet morning, Monika had a gift for finding joy in both life's grand adventures and its smallest moments. She was a passionate reader, a devoted gardener, an enthusiastic bird watcher, a lifelong lover of the arts, and someone with a deep compassion for animals. An avid hiker, Monika found great joy in exploring the outdoors through her involvement with the Sierra Club, where she formed cherished friendships with fellow hikers who shared her love of nature and adventure. Her curiosity and appreciation for the world around her were contagious, encouraging others to slow down and find joy in everyday life. Monika's home reflected her heart—warm, welcoming, and filled with love. Family and friends always knew they would find an open door, a delicious home-cooked meal, and a place where laughter came easily. She loved bringing people together around her table, hosting gatherings that created cherished memories and strengthened family bonds. Although she built a beautiful life in America, she remained deeply connected to her family in Germany and took great joy in sharing her heritage. German traditions, recipes, and holiday customs became treasured parts of family celebrations, allowing generations to remain connected to the culture and loved ones she held so dear. Of all of Monika's accomplishments, none brought her greater pride or deeper fulfillment than being a mother and grandmother. She taught her family what unconditional love looked like—not through grand gestures, but through her unwavering presence, devotion, and the countless ways she showed up for the people she loved. To those who loved her most, she was simply Mumsy and Mimi—titles she treasured above all others. She was a constant source of love, encouragement, and strength—always present to celebrate life's milestones, offer comfort during its hardships, and cherish the everyday moments in between. Her family was her greatest joy, and the love she poured into them will continue to shape generations to come. From wartime East Prussia, through the hardships of postwar Germany, to building a beautiful life in America, Monika's journey was defined by courage, quiet strength, and enduring hope. She faced every chapter with an open heart, leaving those around her better for having known her. Monika was preceded in death by her father, Karsten von Manteuffel; her mother, Ulla Plock; and her sister, Ingeborg Plock. She is survived by her daughters, Myka Duval (Nick Schreiber) and Kerry Hyatt (Dan Hyatt); her cherished grandchildren, Alexander Hyatt and Anika Hyatt; her beloved brother, Gerd-Ewald von Manteuffel; her beloved sister, Kristine Faulhaber; her beloved brother, Kay Backeshoff-Beckman; her beloved sister, Anne-Josée Backeshoff; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends in Germany and the United States. Monika's love, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her legacy is one of a life beautifully lived. Perhaps the greatest tribute you can give is the gift of donating blood. The selfless generosity of blood donors gave our beloved Mumsy and Mimi more precious time with the people she loved. It is a gift that can never be repaid, but one that we hope others will choose to give in her memory, offering hope and more cherished moments to another family.
