Denny L. Spencer

Denny Spencer, 90 years young, from Halsey, formerly from Corvallis, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 surrounded by his family and loving caregivers at the Veterans Administration Home in Lebanon, Oregon. Denny was born to Fred Spencer and Leonora A. Vanatta Spencer on March 18, 1927 in Pocatello, Idaho. When Denny was young, the family came to live in Corvallis. He grew up farming with his 6 older siblings. He graduated from Corvallis High School in 1945. He joined the armed forces, Army division and became a paratrooper. For many years Denny drove log trucks, a job that required going to where the work was, and his family moved many times, to many places. The family eventually settled back in Corvallis where he worked at the OSU bookstore. Finally he went to work for Corvallis Disposal from which he retired. After retiring, he moved to the country where he lived close to his son and his family. Denny loved to garden and enjoyed his grandkids and great grandkids. Denny married Berna Lee Williams in 1953. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and in 1973, his beloved wife. Denny is survived by his children, Kathleen Ann Haywood, (Michael Haywood); Lonnie L. Spencer, (Kathy Gaye Spencer); Diana Jo Spencer, (Gary Hoflich); Joni Marie Spencer-Dorsey, (Ken Dorsey);Tamela Lou Aldrich, (Joe Aldrich); Randy Spencer, (Melinda Spencer); 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 1 niece and 2 nephews. Denny’s ashes will be placed with Berna Lee at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Corvallis during a private family gathering. A public memorial for family and friends will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the VA Home-Charlie 1 Unit for the dignity, devotion and loving care they gave him in the short time he was there. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations made in Denny’s name to the VA Home 600 N 6th Street, Lebanon, OR 97355.
