George E. Thornburgh Born 16 April 1923 in Blair, Nebraska, to G. Carroll and M. Newell Thornburgh. Died 5 August 2014 in Corvallis, Oregon. Graduated from Blair High School in 1940. Received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Nebraska in 1944 and a MS degree in ME from Iowa State University in 1950. Member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Married Marjorie Mains in Lincoln, Nebraska on 7 March 1943. Served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and remained in the active Naval Reserve until 1972. Taught in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Oregon State University from 1952 to 1984. Was Director of Planning and Institutional Research at Oregon State from 1967 until 1974. Member of Pi Tau Sigma engineering honorary fraternity, Sigma Tau mechanical engineering honorary fraternity, American Society of Mechanical Engineering, American Society of Heating and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers. Winner of the Loyd Carter Award in 1957 for outstanding teaching at OSU. Listed in Who’s Who in The West and American Men and Women of Science. Member of the First United Methodist Church of Corvallis. Served on a number of civic committees for the City of Corvallis and the Corvallis School System. Survived by his wife Marjorie of Corvallis and sister Linda Brunk of Lincoln, Nebraska. Also survived by son Larry Thornburgh of Redmond, Oregon, and three daughters: Lynn Thornburgh of Gilbert, Arizona; Marsha Rider of Lincoln City, Oregon; and Joan Heilman of Redmond, Oregon. Had 7 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
