April 8, 1916 - September 14, 2010
Kamilla U. Baily (Kay) died Sept. 14, 2010. She passed quickly and painlessly, outside on a warm, beautiful day, accompanied by her son. She lived in Corvallis for the last five years, but her heart was in Santa Barbara, Calif., where she had lived for the previous 27 years, after taking early retirement. She was a native of New York City, growing up in Brooklyn. During World War II, she served as an anti-aircraft gunnery instructor in the WAVES. Her training and saying goodbye to many young men who never returned led her to a belief in pacifism. In civilian life, she was a professional social worker, receiving Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science Degrees from the University of Denver. She went on to postgraduate work at University of California, Los Angeles, and Bryn Mawr College, ultimately teaching at LA State University and later the School of Social Work at San Diego State University, retiring as an associate professor emeritus. In 1978, she moved to Santa Barbara, where she became an active participant in a number of social agency boards and public committees, and particularly enjoyed her years as a docent at the SB Museum of Art. In the late 1980s ,she suffered a debilitating illness that curtailed her community involvement, except for a three-year period of tutoring second-grade students at Monroe Elementary School in Santa Barbara. In 2005, she moved to Corvallis, where she lived independently. Every day she tried to make the world a little bit better, and, doing so, touched many lives. She is survived by her son Albert Lang Baily; Albert’s wife Colleen; and two grandchildren, Justine Ruth and Aric Lang Baily, to whom she was deeply devoted. She requested that no memorial services be held.
