    Marshall B. Field

    May 22, 1941 - July 12, 2019

Marshall “Butch” Field 1941 – 2019 Butch, or Marshall as he was professionally known, passed away on July 12 after a sudden illness. He loved his home in the trees outside of Corvallis, where he lived with his late and beloved wife Marie for 40 years. He was very independent, and over the years pursued an eclectic array of interests including horseback riding, sculpture, gardening, construction, wildflower identification, and tinkering with machinery. He loved hiking and riding in McDonald Forest; his dozens of self-made mix tapes and CDs included songs from country, folk, punk rock, Bob Dylan, Pink Martini, and opera. He was a member of Oregon Equestrian Trails and neighborhood groups, and participated in the Benton County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse and search and rescue team. While a farmer at heart, Butch thrived in his career as a scientist, launched at Ohio’s Wilmington College, where he met Marie, and was awarded his graduate degree in math and physics at Oregon State University. He lived in Ohio and Pennsylvania working in research and development for Owens-Illinois and related companies before returning to Corvallis. He worked for more than 25 years at Hewlett Packard where he helped create many new techniques and products, with more than 26 patents issued, and subsequently at Perpetua, where he worked with thermoelectric generators. Butch often expressed his admiration and appreciation for the intelligence of his colleagues and was grateful for the opportunities he had to work in research and manufacturing. He is survived and deeply missed by his daughter, Jean Field, her long-term partner Tim Redmond, and grandchildren Vivian and Michael Redmond. He would wish to thank all the neighbors, friends, and colleagues who engaged and supported him, particularly in the years since Marie passed away.
