Martha Day Notkin
February 3, 1922 - November 1, 2010
Martha Notkin passed away peacefully on Nov. 1 at her home at Stoneybrook Lodge. Martha was a native of Oakdale, Calif., and was born, it is reported, on the kitchen table at her grandfather’s ranch. So marked the beginning of a life lived “her way and in her time.” Martha’s childhood was spent in North Carolina, California and Mexico. In Mexico she learned Spanish, which she spoke fluently throughout her life. As a military wife, she spent several years in Japan before returning to California. She moved to Corvallis in 2004. Martha began her work life as a milliner. Her fine handwork, excellence in sewing and eye for design led her to professional custom quilting and interior design, and eventually to the establishment of her own business. Following her retirement, Martha began creating miniatures. She built and decorated exquisite doll houses. Several of these she donated to charities to be used in successful fundraising efforts. In addition to being artistic, Martha was a connoisseur of antique stores and thrift shops. She had an eye for quality, beauty and a good deal. Martha was the widow of Dr. Herbert Notkin. She is survived by her sister, Helen Vedovelli of Corvallis; her stepdaughter, Ronnie Walker; sisters-in-law; nieces; great-grandnieces and -nephews; other family members in Utah and California; as well as many fine friends and neighbors. Her brother, Warren Ellis Day of New Mexico, predeceased Martha. Martha held a lifelong devotion to animals, and would be pleased if donations were made in her name to SafeHaven Humane Society, P.O. Box 2018, Albany, OR 97322. Services will take place in Oakdale at a later date.
