    Mary I. Glenn

    January 31, 1940 - February 1, 2018

Jan. 31, 1940 - Feb. 1, 2018 Mary Isabel (Lambert) Glenn died peacefully after a long illness. Mary was born in Philadelphia, PA. She received a B.A. from Chestnut Hill College and a M.A. from Mount Holyoke College, both in chemistry. Mary married William "Bill" H. Glenn July 4, 1966. They settled in Vernon, CT after Bill accepted a position as a scientist at United Technologies Research Center. During the three decades that Mary lived in Vernon, she actively engaged in numerous community activities including the Vernon Planning and Zoning Commission, the League of Women Voters, Friends of Valley Falls, local Bicentennial celebrations and the Hockanum River Linear Park Committee. Mary's greatest passion was teaching, in particular, helping adults overcome math anxiety. She worked as a GED teacher in the Vernon School System and at Manchester and Asnuntuk Community Colleges. In 2000, she moved to Oregon, where her daughters were living. She was one of the early residents of the Belmont Dairy row houses in Southeast Portland and volunteered in the Sunnyside neighborhood. During her time in Portland, Mary worked as a math instructor at Portland Community College. She found her true calling helping students entering the community college system to master fractions, decimals and percents. Mary was a founding member of Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery and was instrumental in getting the Lone Fir Cemetery on the National Register of Historic Places. She liked sharing her knowledge of early Portland history with visitors to the cemetery during annual events on Halloween and Memorial Day. Throughout her life, Mary enjoyed international travel, U.S. history, as well as many plays, concerts and civic events. She was predeceased by her husband and her parents. She is survived by her two daughters, Betsy (Elizabeth) Glenn of Corvallis, OR and Jessica Glenn of Spokane, WA. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., April 7, 2018, at All Saints Parish in Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the educational institution or charity of your choice.
