July 3, 1924 - December 21, 2012
Mary Anna Widmer died in the early hours of the solstice, Friday, Dec. 21, in Corvallis. She was 88. She was born to Della and Aaron Dearing in Philomath on July 3, 1924. After graduating from Corvallis High School with the class of 1942, she married Jason Widmer on Dec. 16, 1944, at Boston’s Harvard Chapel. Before returning to Corvallis in 2006, Mary Anna lived most of her life in the San Francisco Bay area. She and Jason raised their three sons, living in Berkeley, Oakland and then moving to San Rafael in 1960. Mary Anna served as deacon for the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael, and also visited homebound members of the congregation and cooked meals for a homeless shelter. As an election official, she ran a precinct polling place from the family garage. She volunteered for the Marin County Sunny Hills Guild and also for the Bargain Box charitable thrift store in San Rafael. She played bridge, dominoes and golf, and enthusiastically attended countless football, basketball and baseball games, including those of her three sons. Over the years, she assembled a world class stamp collection and was known for her green thumb, lovingly tending her many flowers and plants. Mary Anna and Jason traveled extensively across six continents, but always loved returning home to close friends and family. Mary Anna was preceded in death by her older sister, Jean. She is survived by her husband, Jason, of 68 years; sister Martha Lewis of Salem; brother Aaron Dearing Jr. of Albany; son Jay Widmer and grandchildren Alison, Nicholas and Peter Clair of Corvallis; son Roger, wife Barbara and grandchildren Matthew and Carolyn, and son Lowell and wife Lydia, all of Massachusetts. Mary Anna will be fondly remembered for her generosity and exuberance, her youthful gait, stylish flair and simple elegance. The family will host a gathering to remember and celebrate Mary Anna’s life at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Jay’s home in Corvallis, 121 N.W. 28th St. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Mary Anna’s honor to a charity of your choice.
