Raymond Rex Newby, Jr.

August 14, 1939 - February 20, 2016

Raymond Rex Newby, or “Rex” as most knew him, was born in Los Angeles, California on August 14th, 1939. Rex was raised in Rancho Palos Verdes, a coastal suburb of Los Angeles where he stayed until he enlisted in the US Air Force. Rex was a medic in the US Air Force in the 20th TAC Hospital at RAF Wethersfield, England between April 1962 and received an honorable discharge in December 1965. Rex had a love for cars and motorcycles, especially Harley Davidson. While in England, Rex bought one of the first Mini Coopers and could not give it up. When Rex moved back to the states, he had his Mini shipped back with him. After Rex’s military career, he returned to Palos Verdes and received his nursing credentials. In 1970 Rex became a nurse for Kaiser Permanente South Bay in Los Angeles. For 25 years Rex was the evening Charge Nurse in the Critical Care Unit. During that time, Rex met his wife Susan, who was also a nurse with Kaiser. Rex thoroughly loved helping people as a nurse and loved to talk about his “nursing war stories” with family and friends over the years. Rex and Susan retired in Corvallis, Oregon in 2010. During that time Rex loved to read, take road trips, go trap shooting, and ride his motorcycle as much as he could. Rex is survived by his wife of 36 years, Susan, his sons Nick, Doug, and sons from a previous marriage Sean and Bryan. Rex was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Corliss and father Raymond Rex Newby Sr. If desired, donations in Rex’s name can be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
