Shirley Anne Ashworth

Shirley Anne Ashworth, 89, of Corvallis passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. She was born to Harold and Audra Larned McCrady on Nov. 7, 1927, in the brick house on S.W. 10th Street, which still stands today. While attending high school, Shirley met Staff Sgt. Howard Ashworth who was stationed at Camp Adair. They married on Nov. 24, 1945, after his return from serving in Europe. Howard built two homes for Shirley, one on Peavy Arboretum Road, where they raised their children, and one on Armstrong Way. They remained married until the time of his death in 1990. Shirley worked over the years at some of Corvallis’ landmark retail stores, B&H Hardware, McGregors, and The 88 Cent Store. She was also an avid knitter and a keen card player. Shirley is survived by her children and their spouses, Susan Carpenter of Albany, Dennis (Vivian) Ashworth of Battle Ground, Washington, Carol (Deral) Kent of Humble, Texas, Glen (Pamela) Ashworth of Lebanon; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Ann Hilderbrand of Corvallis and Vicki (Michael) Reagan of Pasadena, Texas; and one brother Art (Lorene) Spencer of Albany. In addition to her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by a brother, Del Bryant; sister-in-law Reeta Bryant; and brother-in-law Orval Hilderbrand. A celebration-of-life service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home, 815 N.W. Buchanan Ave., Corvallis.
