William Rater

William Rater, 94, of Corvallis died April 8 in Roseburg. Bill was born in Portland to Adolph and Mary Reich Rotter. He grew up in Portland, and joined the U.S. Army in 1940. He served for five years in the South Pacific during World War II, and received the Philippine Liberation Medal with Bronze Service Star. Later he was a federal firefighter for 30 years at Tongue Point Naval Base in Astoria, Camp Adair and the Presidio in San Francisco, Calif. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and golfing. For many years, he was a member of Marysville Golf Course. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Survivors include daughters Toni (and Dale) Ritter of Roseburg, and Deborah (and Richard) Johnson of Orem, Utah; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wives, Marjorie, Luba and Betty; and his granddaughter, Deborah Bielawski. A family graveside service is planned.
