    Winifred "Winnie" Coleman

    October 17, 1922 - February 1, 2016

    Winifred Sharp Coleman passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 1, 2016. Winnie was born Oct 17, 1922 in Springfield, Illinois to Loren Bethel Thompson and Jennie Fern Sharp Thompson. She was the youngest of four children. First born, James Thompson, died in infancy; siblings, Loren Bethel Thompson, and Vaunee Thompson Larson were born soon after. Winnie graduated from Franklin High School in Portland, OR. Marriage followed in 1941 to Loren C. Coleman at St. Stephens Church in Portland. Winnie and Loren raised five children in Corvallis, OR where Loren’s building contracting business flourished. Winnie entered the work force in 1969 where she found employment at OSU Food Service. After 20 years, she retired in 1990. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church as well as president and charter member of both “Mary’s Peak Orchard Society” and “Corvallis Square Dancers”. She was also a charter member of OSU King Road Home Extension. Winnie was a community volunteer and in 2014 was pleased to gain membership in the “General Society of Mayflower Descendants”. Her hobbies included gardening, camping and fishing. She enjoyed traveling and she was an avid reader. Last but not least, Winnie was a passionate shopper! Winnie spend her last 13 years at the Corvallis Caring Place where she was loved and well cared for. She is survived by daughters, Jennie Coleman Slaughter (Malcolm), Rosalie Coleman Becker (Lawrence), Kathleen Coleman Acun (Pascal), Juanita Coleman Spilde (Denton); son, Stephen Coleman; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am, Monday, February 8, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 501 NW 25th Street, Corvallis, with viewing from 9:00 am until time of service.
