Jeannine Ann Gay

Jeannine Ann Gay, 92, resident of Philomath, Oregon passed away on September 26, 2023 at the Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House in Albany, Oregon. Our beloved mother Jeannie was born in Iowa City, Iowa on June 28, 1931. She was the only child of Raymond and Martha Culp. She attended Iowa City High School and graduated with the class of 1949. On June 21, 1953, Jeannie was united in marriage with our father Robert Louis Gay in Iowa City and then honeymooned in Florida. Even with the challenges of raising five sons, Jeannie was active in community organizations and public efforts throughout her lifetime. She was involved in the Iowa City Jay-C-Ettes and was elected as the State President. She received a Lifetime Membership in 1965. In 1970, Jeannie and Robert moved our family to Corvallis, Oregon. Our mother always enjoyed the outdoors and worked as a Christmas tree trimmer for several years. In 1973, our parents purchased and operated the Gay’s Myrtlewood Gift Factory in Philomath. In 1983 they moved from Corvallis to Philomath. Jeannie continued her involvement in community organizations. The Philomath Chamber of Commerce honored her with the First Citizen award in 1980. She served as the President of the Board of Directors for the Corvallis/Philomath Junior Achievement organization from 1982-84. Our parents were active members of the Philomath Youth Activities Club for many years. Jeannie was always interested in the welfare of Philomath. She was an outspoken advocate for change that would benefit the citizens. She served Philomath as Mayor from 1989-1993. She served several years as a City Council member and served on many City Commissions. She was instrumental in the urban renewal development of Philomath. She was a Board Member of the Benton County Fairgrounds, was active in the Republican party, and was an advocate for the Timber Industry. Even during her later years, Jeannie was outspoken about improving the welfare of Philomath and its citizens. She was not shy about expressing her opinions, while at the same time being a caring and loyal person. She took interest in her community, neighbors, family, and dear friends. Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband Robert. She is survived by son Douglas (Sergio), son Wayne (Michelle), son Brian (Tina), son Jeffrey (Sanae), and son Dale (Sandi). She has ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Our mother is greatly missed. Yet we have comfort to know that all we need to do is look in the night sky to see Jeannie and Robert sparkling among the stars. They are always there to hear our thoughts and concerns. A private graveside service will be at a later date. Family requests donations be made to the Philomath Youth Activities Club.
